Elegoo Resin Printer Not Curing: 7 Fixes Before You Call a Repair Shop

An Elegoo resin printer that won't cure is one of the most disorienting failures in the maker workshop. The machine runs through its motions, the build plate lifts and lowers, and you get a vat full of liquid resin instead of a finished part. Most of the time the fix is not a dead UV module. Here are seven things to check first.

Why Resin Fails to Cure (and Why It Usually Is Not the Light Source)

MSLA resin printers cure photopolymer resin by exposing it to UV light through a monochrome LCD masking layer. When that process fails completely, people assume the UV light array is dead. That happens, but it is one of the less common root causes. The more common culprits are resin chemistry, FEP condition, exposure settings, and ambient temperature -- all of which are owner-serviceable without any tools or replacement parts.

Start with the cheapest and fastest checks. Replace major components only after ruling out everything else.

Fix 1: Check the Resin Temperature

Photopolymer resin has a narrow working temperature range. Elegoo's standard resins are formulated to cure reliably between about 20 and 30 degrees Celsius (68 to 86 Fahrenheit). Below that range, the resin becomes viscous and sluggish, and exposure times calibrated for room temperature will leave it partially or completely uncured.

If you are printing in a garage, basement, or any space that runs cool, this is the first thing to fix. Warm the resin bottle in a container of warm water for 10 to 15 minutes before pouring it into the vat. Do not use hot water: you want the resin warm to the touch, not hot. A small space heater aimed at the print area (not at the vat directly) helps if your ambient temperature is consistently low. Check this one first because it costs nothing.

Fix 2: Increase the Bottom Layer Exposure Time

The bottom layer exposure setting is the single most common cause of prints that fail to stick or cure. It controls how long the UV light holds each initial layer against the FEP film to build the foundation that everything else hangs from. If it is too short, the first few layers cure partially but do not bond to the build plate, and you get a vat soup instead of a print.

Elegoo's Chitu-based firmware exposes this setting directly in the slice file. If you are using Chitubox or Lychee Slicer, look for "Bottom Exposure Time" or "Bottom Layer Exposure." For standard Elegoo ABS-Like or Water Washable resins, the recommended starting point is 35 to 50 seconds for the first 4 to 6 layers. If you have been using a community-sourced profile and it is failing, increase bottom exposure by 10 seconds and test a small calibration print before running a full job.

Fix 3: Inspect the FEP Film

The FEP film is the transparent layer at the bottom of the resin vat. It is the surface the cured layer releases from during each lift cycle. A cloudy, scratched, or punctured FEP film scatters UV light before it reaches the resin, reducing the effective dose to the point where curing fails or becomes inconsistent.

Remove the vat and hold the FEP film up to a light source. A healthy FEP is optically clear with a slight texture from normal use. If it looks milky, hazy, or has visible scratches in the printing area, the FEP needs replacement. A new FEP film for any Elegoo model runs a few dollars and takes about 20 minutes to swap. It is one of the consumable components on any MSLA printer and should be replaced every 20 to 30 liters of resin or any time you see mechanical damage.

Fix 4: Clean the LCD Screen Surface

The monochrome LCD sits directly below the FEP film and acts as the masking layer that shapes each exposure. Resin that seeps through a damaged FEP or accumulates on the underside of the vat can get onto the LCD surface. Even a thin film of cured resin on the LCD scatters and blocks light, producing the same symptom as a failed UV array.

With the vat removed, inspect the LCD surface with a flashlight. Wipe it gently with 90 percent or higher isopropyl alcohol on a lint-free cloth. Do not use paper towels, which scratch the LCD coating. Do not apply pressure to the center of the screen. If there is hardened resin on the LCD that won't clean with IPA, it has likely bonded to the coating, and the LCD itself may need replacement.

Fix 5: Verify the UV Light Array Is Actually Firing

Now that the cheaper checks are done, confirm the UV array is actually functioning. Do not look directly at the array during this test. Place a small piece of photographic paper or an old business card on the LCD, run a test exposure from the printer menu (usually under "Tools" or "Exposure Test"), and check whether the paper shows any UV exposure marks or the card shows any light pattern.

Alternatively, place a small amount of fresh resin in a clear cup and hold it above the LCD during a test exposure. If the resin on the LCD-facing surface skins over or hardens, the array is producing UV light. If nothing happens after a 30-second exposure, the UV module or its power connection is the problem. Fix 6: Check the Resin Itself for Age and Contamination

Photopolymer resin degrades over time and with UV exposure. A vat that has been sitting open, or resin that has been stored in a clear container near a window, can lose significant curing sensitivity before showing any visible sign of degradation. Old resin may still look liquid and behave normally during a print run while refusing to cure properly under normal exposure settings.

If you have been using the same batch of resin for more than a year, or storing it in conditions that allowed any UV exposure, try a fresh bottle. Pour the old resin through a fine-mesh filter back into its original opaque bottle for potential rework, and run a test print with the new batch before diagnosing hardware. Resin is cheap compared to a UV module replacement.

Contamination is a related problem. If your vat contains any cured resin debris from a previous failed print, it settles on the FEP and creates shadow points that produce uncured patches. Strain the vat resin through a paint strainer into a clean container, rinse the vat with fresh resin, and discard the rinse before refilling.

Fix 7: Update or Reinstall the Firmware and Slice File

A corrupted slice file or outdated firmware can produce symptoms that look like a curing failure. If the exposure timing data in the print file is malformed, the printer may execute the lift cycle without completing the exposure step. This is rare but real -- and it has a distinctive tell: the machine appears to complete each layer at normal speed without pausing on the exposure step.

Re-slice the model fresh in your slicer software, export a new file to the USB drive (do not copy over the existing file, delete it first), and run the print again. If you have not updated the firmware on your Elegoo printer in more than a year, download the current version from Elegoo's official support page for your exact model and follow their update procedure. When It Is Actually the Hardware

If you have worked through all seven steps and still have uncured resin, the hardware is genuinely the problem. The two most common hardware faults on Elegoo printers are a failed UV light bar and a failed mainboard that no longer sends the correct exposure signal. Both are component-level repairs.

The UV light bar is the easier of the two. Elegoo sells them as spare parts for most current models and the swap requires only a screwdriver. The mainboard is a deeper repair that involves connector work and the risk of compounding the problem if done incorrectly. FAQ

My Elegoo prints the first layer fine but later layers won't cure. What does that mean?

This is almost always an exposure time problem for normal layers rather than the bottom layers. If bottom exposure is correct but standard layer exposure is too short, you get solid first layers and uncured soup above them. Increase your normal layer exposure time by 1 to 2 seconds and run a calibration lattice print to find the threshold for your specific resin and room temperature.

The resin is hardening in the vat but not printing. Why?

If resin is curing against the FEP film rather than sticking to the build plate, the build plate is too far from the FEP during the first layer, or the build plate surface needs to be cleaned and scuffed. Re-level the build plate, lower it to zero, and check that it makes even contact across the entire FEP surface. A build plate that is even slightly off-level will cure layers unevenly and cause adhesion failures.

Does changing resin brands require new exposure settings?

Yes, and this is a very common cause of curing failures after switching resins. Every resin formulation has different photoinitiator chemistry and requires different exposure times to cure correctly. Do not assume the settings for one brand transfer to another. Start with the manufacturer's recommended settings for the new resin and run an exposure calibration print before committing to a full job.

Can I mix old resin with new to use it up?

Technically yes, but it introduces risk. Mixed batches may have inconsistent photoinitiator concentrations that produce variable curing across a print. If you do mix batches, keep the old resin proportion below 25 percent of the total vat volume, mix thoroughly, and run a test print before a production job. Do not mix different resin types (standard, water-washable, ABS-like) as the chemistry conflicts and curing failure is likely.
